[/justify]Daphne was confused by his statement. What would Zeke be the king of? What kind of army? A political army? She knew that he had political aspirations, but she couldn’t help but feel as if there was something else going on there, ”What kind of army would follow you?” She tried her hand at joking, although she was sure that her tone came off as a little more serious than she had originally anticipated. She immediately heard it in her own voice and then smiled at Zeke, hoping not to have caused any unwanted tension, ”I certainly wouldn’t follow you, Mr. Not-King-Of-The-Chess.” She rolled her eyes and then picked up a knight, watching him draw his sword. Sometimes Daph wondered about her knight in shining armor. She had never given it much thought until this year. There were plenty of pawns in this world to fool around with, but there was only one - well, she stared down at the board - two knights to protect the Queen. Fearing that the board was tempting her with possibilities, Daphne immediately put down all the pieces and stared up at Zeke like a patient child.
She followed his explanation as best she could, although, she was sure that she was missing the main point of chess still. She couldn’t help but feel as if he knew that she had never played before and was trying his best to explain it to her without giving away that he knew her predicament. That was noble in Daphne’s eyes. She supposed that he thought that she had suffered enough social embarrassment to last a life time over the past week. Daphne watched as he picked up the Queen - it was her favorite piece of the set, dressed it long robes and with an almost giddy demeanor, she was the reason that Daph always opted to be the white pieces. She looked up at Zeke, expecting him to be watching the Queen as well, but his eyes were trained on hers, staring into her soul. She was taken off guard by what he was saying and the way that he was staring at her. What was going on with him tonight? She reached forward and plucked the Queen from his palm, placing her back in the empty spot, ”Then all men are fools.” She answered him quietly and then smiled, ”Here’s to the foolish ones, waiting around for the right women.” She folded her arms neatly across her chest and continued to smile at Zeke.
She did not like that grin. There was something about the grin on Zeke’s face that made her want to wipe it right off...probably with a slap or a right hook. She knew that grin all too well. It was the same one that he used in Hawaii when he tried to get Astoria to do something. And, of course, it had always worked on AJ because right after her flashed it, he would launch into a chide about how she wasn’t as cool as her sister or how she needed to loosen up like Daphne. She could only imagine what he had in store for her now. ‘Prudish?’ Daphne felt herself laugh aloud and then shook her head, ”Maxi-pad, I’m not prudish in the slightest.” She said and uncrossed her arms. She was not about to take this from him. He was her little sister’s ex-boyfriend, so she had to know how to manipulate just as well as he did, ”It’s not prudishness,” She argued carefully as she stared at Zeke, her lips curling up slightly in a smile, ”It’s standards. If you win this round, we’ll play Hufflepuff rules.” She yawned loudly and her subconscious gave her a nice pat on the back. She knew she was already tired and she probably wouldn’t even last through this first match that they had set up. Two to play the manipulation game and only one would win. Daphne knew that it would most likely be her.
She sat there staring as Zeke’s knight made its way across the board, lifting it sword as if preparing for battle. Daphne winced, knowing that soon all of her pieces would be put at risk and she would have to watch each one of them crumble, ”There is nothing in my life that resembles a chess game,” Daph said and shrugged her shoulders even though she knew it to be untrue. Earlier she had been comparing her life to the knights and Queen of the board. It was horrifying how you could make almost anything apply if you stared at the checked board. She realized that it was her turn. Unsure of what to do, yet again, she pointed another pawn to a different square and watched as it trudged along. She wondered how her pieces seemed to know that she had no idea what she was doing. Was it her lack of confidence? She bit down on her lip and looked back up at Zeke, ”There are too many variables in real life for it to be like a chess game.” She shrugged her shoulders. She wasn’t sure why she felt the need to be so...philosophical around Zeke, but it seemed to come naturally when she was around him. What was he doing to Daphne Greengrass?!
